The Cinema – My Blood Is Full Of Airplanes
If you listen to Lydia, then you definitely need to be listening to Leighton Antelman’s new project, The Cinema. Now if you’re expecting another Lydia album then you will be pleasantly surprised. My Blood Is Full Of Airplanes is The Cinema’s debut album; unlike Lydia, it’s melody-ridden and driven by bouncy electronic beats giving it more of a pop sound.
The opening song “Satellites” lets you know exactly what I mean by the electronic-pop sound that is prevalent in this album. Filled with deep beats, the song is extremely catchy and will be stuck in your head after the first listen. In contrast the song “Kill It” or “The Wolf” gives you a hint of what Leighton is known for from the Lydia albums. From the third song on, your realize this album is a lot more fun and catchy but it still retains some of the loved sounds from Lydia.
Now right when you think it is an entire album of electronic pop catchy music Leighton puts a darker, sinister song in the mix. Right when “She’s On My Arm Now” the lyrics “Money ate out problems” sets a clear sinister mood from the start. Similar the second to last song “All The Lights” gives you more of a darker mood when Leighton echoes through the song, “All of those flashing lights/ They couldn’t fix me like she could.”
One of my favorite songs, “Banker” seems to be one of the most seamless songs. The chorus seems to fit perfectly with the electronic backbone of the song. Finally, the final song “My Blood Is Full Of Airplanes” leaves you on very soft note. With amazingly graphic lyrics like “I’m throwing lassos at the sky, catching moments as big as my eyes, intoxicating like, like we’re on a gold mine” give you chills. After the song is over you just can’t help but to put it on repeat.
Overall, this album is amazing and worth a listen.
